The elusive 1807 in Pink Gold
Among vintage Rolex watches, the dial is usually the centerpiece of rarity. However, with the Day-Date 1807, the story goes further — here, the case and bracelet themselves become just as rare and significant as the dial.
Launched in the 1960s, the 1807 was Rolex’s experimental twist on the classic 1803. Instead of a standard case, Rolex gave the Day-Date a distinctive “Bark” finish, hand-engraved to resemble tree bark across the bezel and bracelet center links. This detail was extraordinary for a brand known as a precision manufacturer, showcasing a rare artisanal approach. Produced in yellow, white, and pink gold, the pink examples are by far the rarest — surfacing only on very rare occasions.
This example, dating to 1965, is preserved in outstanding condition. The case remains sharp, with prominent bark finishing contrasting against the matte lugs. Importantly, it retains its original pink gold riveted Oyster bracelet, licensed and manufactured in South America, featuring hallmarks on every component. Complete with 12 links, the bracelet is spring-loaded, tight, and elastic — an incredibly rare survivor after nearly 60 years.
The color of the gold is another highlight. Many vintage pink gold Rolex watches fade toward yellow over time, but this one retains its deep, vibrant pink hue. This variation is consistent with Rolex’s challenges in perfecting its pink gold alloy during the 1960s, making each piece visually unique.
Paired with the watch is the ultimate dial choice: a black glossy lacquer dial reminiscent of Stella finishes. It offers dramatic depth and shine, with pink-toned print and intact luminous plots aged to warm brown, perfectly matching the original hands. The champagne-colored Portuguese calendar discs confirm that this watch was manufactured for and delivered to Brazil.
The result is a dream-like combination: vivid pink gold, hand-carved bark bezel, sleek and expandable Oyster bracelet, and glossy black lacquer dial. More than a watch, it is a statement of artistry and rarity. After many years in our private collection, this marvel is now offered to its next custodian — a truly exceptional opportunity to own a serious collector’s grade Day Date that will put a smile on your face whenever you want to know the time.
