A CPCP
Cartier has always had a way of revisiting its own designs without losing their original character. The Tonneau is one of those shapes — first introduced in the early 20th century and reinterpreted many times since. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, within the Collection Privée Cartier Paris (CPCP), Cartier began to approach these historic forms with more focus, bringing back mechanical movements and paying closer attention to detail. The dual time Tonneau comes from that period.
At first glance, the watch feels familiar — the curved case, Roman numerals, and cabochon-set crowns. Looking closer, the layout becomes more interesting. Two dials, two crowns, and two separate movements. Rather than a conventional dual time display, Cartier chose to house two independent time zones in a white gold case, each adjustable to the minute. It’s a slightly unusual approach, but one that works well once understood.
The proportions play an important role. The curved tonneau case sits comfortably on the wrist, while the size gives the watch a bit more presence than expected. The guilloché dials with blued hands keep things classic, but the overall layout avoids feeling too formal. It’s a watch that feels familiar, yet a little different at the same time.
This example is well preserved, with a clean case, sharp engravings, and both cabochon-set crowns intact. It comes fitted with its Cartier strap and deployant clasp. Pieces like this tend to appeal quietly — not immediately obvious, but increasingly interesting the more time one spends with them.
