Snow White
The Bubbleback is among the earliest watches to ever be seriously collected. There was a real boom in the 1980s, when they were, at times, trading above vintage Daytonas. They represent a period where the 32mm Oyster with automatic winding was the watch. Produced across what feels like an endless range of configurations and in almost every metal — with the exception of platinum — the variety is part of what makes them so interesting. Trying to catalogue them all would be nearly impossible.
We have here a particularly clean example in stainless steel, arguably in its purest form, with regular lugs and a smooth bezel. The dial, however, is anything but standard. A snow-white base with applied pink metal minute track, numerals, and hands gives it a very distinctive look. And when we say snow-white, the surface has developed a soft, even aging that adds depth rather than distraction — almost like a light layer of snow across the dial. The subsidiary seconds carries the “Chronometre” signature just above the subdial.
Bubblebacks have a strong following today, though finding truly well-preserved examples has become increasingly difficult. Many of the best pieces have long since found their way into established collections, particularly in Asia, where appreciation for these early Oysters runs deep.
It feels as though the Bubbleback is slowly finding its way back into focus. Not through hype, but through a growing appreciation for what these watches represent — early Rolex at its most diverse and characterful.
