Everest
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 5504 sits within the early Explorer lineage of the late 1950s — a period where Rolex experimented with different dial executions and subtle variations before the model language became more fixed. Introduced around 1957, these watches carried the “Super Precision” designation rather than chronometer text, reflecting their more understated positioning at the time.
What immediately defines this example is the Everest-signed honeycomb dial. The texture itself already adds depth, but here it is paired with a dial that remains in exceptionally strong condition. The surface shows very little aging, and the print is not only interesting but also remarkably crisp — we read ‘Everest’ above the center post. A powerful name that in 1953 made history for Rolex but why do we find it on the dial of this watch? The answer is not clear but here are a few theories, one of them being a retailer for Rolex and the other one says that the name Everest might have been used for marketing purposes – we are not certain. But what we do know is that this dial and its print are original. And disregarding what the purpose if this stamp on the dial was – it looks awesome and is something rarely seen on Rolex dial.
The stainless steel case is retained in great condition considering an age of more than 65 years. The reference 5504 is a great reference – the 36mm and lack of date make it a perfect canvas for an interesting dial - truly simple and balanced.
Altogether, this is a very honest and well-preserved example of an already uncommon configuration. A watch that stands out with its beautiful dial.
