A very special Tiger Eye Datejust
Rolex's hardstone dials remain among the manufacture's most distinctive creations. Cut from a single piece of natural stone, every dial is unique, with its own colours, patterns and character. Among them, Tiger Eye has always been one of the most attractive, its golden-brown bands creating a surface that changes constantly as it catches the light. On this Datejust reference 1607, the dial is paired with Rolex's bark-finished bezel, a decorative finish introduced during the 1960s that became one of the brand's most recognisable precious metal decorations. The combination of a Tiger Eye dial and bark bezel is seldom encountered and gives this watch a particularly distinctive appearance.
The watch is further enhanced by its remarkable bracelet, produced by the renowned Hong Kong jeweller and former Rolex retailer King Fook. Rather than simply complementing the case, the bracelet continues the design language of the bark bezel through an intricately hand-engraved finish that echoes its organic texture. Viewed under magnification, the quality of the workmanship becomes even more apparent, revealing countless individually engraved details executed entirely by hand. It feels entirely in keeping with the period and gives the watch a character that differs from a standard factory bracelet while remaining true to its era.
The 36mm 18k yellow gold case has been well preserved, retaining strong proportions, thick lugs and a sharply defined bark-finished bezel. The Tiger Eye dial remains beautifully preserved and displays the warm honey, bronze and golden tones that make this material so appealing we love the notable dark band of the stone under the print, it makes such a difference. As with all natural stone dials, no two examples are ever alike, and the individual patterning of this dial is one of its greatest strengths.
Combining a Tiger Eye hardstone dial, the uncommon bark-finished reference 1607 and an exceptional King Fook bracelet, this is a Datejust that reflects a particularly interesting period in Rolex's history. During the late 1960s and 1970s, respected retailers and jewellers occasionally created bespoke bracelets for their clients, resulting in watches that today offer a fascinating blend of Rolex manufacture and local craftsmanship. This example is a fine illustration of that collaboration and one that stands comfortably apart from more conventional Datejusts.
