The Rose Guilloché
Having handled a large number of vintage Day-Dates over the years, we have come across a wide range of rare and unusual dial configurations. Among all of them, enamel and guilloché dials have always stood out to us as some of the most special — not because they were widely produced, but quite the opposite. They appear only occasionally, often without clear documentation, and tend to feel more like experiments than standard production.
This Oyster Perpetual reference 1002 is a particularly striking example. At first glance, the dial has a softness to it — almost like fabric — something that becomes more apparent the closer you look. Unlike the geometric guilloché patterns typically seen on Rolex dials, this one shows a far more elaborate, almost ornamental design with flower motifs that feel closer to engraving than traditional dial work.
The technique itself points to rose engine turning, a method more commonly associated with high-end decorative work rather than watch dials. It raises questions rather than giving clear answers — whether this was a test dial, a special order, or simply something that never made it into regular production. What is certain is that examples like this are extremely uncommon, and we have not come across another with this exact pattern, not even one with a similar style of work.
The watch itself remains in strong overall condition, with a clean case and a dial that has retained its character beautifully. Pieces like this are less about specification and more about observation — we dare to say that this may be the most romantic dial we have ever seen on a Rolex.
