Military Breguet XX
Few military chronographs carry the same reputation as the Breguet Type XX. Developed during the 1950s for French military aviation, the Type XX was designed as a practical tool for pilots, combining excellent legibility with one of the most useful complications ever fitted to a chronograph: the flyback function. While many collectors associate Breguet with classical watchmaking, the Type XX represents a very different side of the manufacture's history — one rooted in aviation, functionality and military precision.
This example dates to circa 1956 and belongs to the desirable early generation of Type XX watches. Its 38.5mm stainless steel case retains all the proportions that have made the reference so endearingly attractive, striking a balance between rugged utility and understated elegance. The black dial remains beautifully legible with its luminous Arabic numerals, syringe hands and three-register layout, while the rotating bezel reinforces the watch's purpose-built character. Powering the watch is the celebrated Valjoux 720, widely regarded as one of the finest manually wound chronograph movements of its era. Combined with the flyback function, it provided pilots with the ability to instantly reset and restart timing operations during flight.
Unlike many surviving examples that were delivered for military service, this watch is believed to have been supplied for civilian use, making it an interesting variation within the broader Type XX story. Preserved in exceptional original condition, it remains a compelling example of one of the most important military chronographs ever produced. A watch equally appreciated by collectors of aviation history, vintage chronographs and Breguet alike, the Type XX continues to occupy a unique place within twentieth-century watchmaking.
