One of Two Known 1601 Datejusts with the Magical Arabic-Hindi Numerals
Among the many unusual dial variations produced by Rolex over the decades, Arabic-Hindi numerals remain some of the most captivating. While collectors occasionally encounter these numerals on Day-Date references, their appearance on a Datejust is extraordinarily rare. In fact, only a few months after presenting the first known ref. 1601 Datejust with applied Arabic-Hindi numerals that we had ever encountered, we are delighted to offer a second example. Remarkably, this watch takes the concept in an entirely different direction, being cased in 18k pink gold and retaining its original matching pink gold Jubilee bracelet.
Dating to the 1970s, this ref. 1601 combines the warmth of pink gold with one of the most unusual dial configurations we have seen on a Datejust. The applied Arabic-Hindi numerals transform an already elegant watch into something far more expressive, giving it a distinctly Middle Eastern character while retaining all the familiar qualities that have made the Datejust such an enduring classic. The dial remains beautifully balanced, with the applied numerals creating a visual presence that is both striking and refined.
What makes this example even more special is the presence of its original pink gold Jubilee bracelet. On a watch already known in only two examples to us, retaining the bracelet with which it left the factory adds another layer of importance. The combination of pink gold case, matching bracelet and Arabic-Hindi numeral dial creates a configuration that feels exceptionally cohesive and unlike almost anything else in the vintage Rolex world.
To the best of our knowledge, these Datejusts fitted with applied Arabic-Hindi numerals were never part of Rolex's regular serial production and do not appear to have been watches available through ordinary retail channels. Instead, surviving examples suggest they were likely special-order pieces produced specifically for the Middle Eastern market in very small numbers. Whether commissioned through influential retailers or special clients, they represent a fascinating and little-understood chapter in Rolex history. With only two examples known to us, this pink gold ref. 1601 stands among the most intriguing and elusive Datejusts we have encountered.
