During the 1970s and 1980s, the legendary watch designer Gérald Genta collaborated with several prestigious jewelry houses, including Van Cleef & Arpels. The partnership produced some wonderfully unusual watches, combining Genta's distinctive approach to design with the French maison's expertise in precious materials and fine jewelry.

This Ref. G1607 B2 is a fascinating example of that collaboration. Its unusual tortoiseshell case is complemented by an 18K white gold case back, a dark brown-grey wood dial with a beautiful natural grain and diamond hour markers. The combination of materials gives the watch a very distinctive character, quite unlike anything produced by the more traditional Swiss watchmakers of the period.

Of particular interest is the rare automatic movement, a less commonly encountered configuration in this series, with the word "Automatic" proudly printed on the dial beneath the Van Cleef & Arpels signature. A subtle detail that makes this example particularly appealing.

Dating to the 1990s, the watch measures 32 mm but wears considerably larger on the wrist thanks to its broad, distinctive case shape. It is preserved in very nice vintage condition, with the tortoiseshell finish remaining intact, while the white gold back shows deep hallmarks and engravings. It is fitted with a black crocodile leather strap and the original Van Cleef & Arpels white gold pin buckle.

An unusual and charming vintage watch that brings together two celebrated names in watchmaking and jewellery. A great example of Gérald Genta's more playful and unconventional designs.
