King Midas 1st Gen
The Rolex King Midas, introduced in 1962 and designed by Gérald Genta, stands as one of the brand’s rarest and most daring creations. Inspired by the Greek Pantheon, its sharp, asymmetrical case was unlike anything Rolex had produced, with the crown placed on the left to honor the myth of King Midas. This particular example features the crown on the right-hand side.
Produced in only about 1,000 pieces, each King Midas was individually numbered. No. 687 belongs to the first-generation Ref. 9630, distinguished by its integrated heavy “brick” bracelet with butterfly clasp and its champagne dial signed “Midas.” Crafted entirely from solid yellow gold, the watch remains in excellent condition with sharp lines and a powerful wrist presence.
At its release, the King Midas was the heaviest gold watch on the market and priced nearly 50% higher than the Day-Date, making it Rolex’s most exclusive offering of the era. With low production of Ref. 9630 surviving examples are exceptionally scarce and highly sought after by collectors today.
