Eye of the Tiger
Rolex stone dials represent one of Rolex’s more distinctive and design-driven directions, where natural materials such as onyx, lapis, malachite or tiger eye were cut into ultra-thin slices and fitted as dials. Each piece is entirely unique, defined by its natural pattern and color variations. These dials were produced in limited quantities and require careful handling, as they are fragile by nature — any hairlines or cracks significantly affect both aesthetics and value. While most collectors associate stone dials with the Day-Date, their presence on Datejust references is noticeably rarer and earlier, giving them a slightly different appeal. It is to be said here that the Datejust was the first 36mm watch that was fitted with stone dials before the Day Date had it’s debut in 1978.Another subtle but important detail is that certain stones were typically paired with specific metals, creating a natural harmony between case and dial.
The Rolex Datejust reference 1601 seen here is fitted with a Tiger Eye dial — a stone exclusively found on yellow gold watches, as its warm brown and golden hues complement the metal perfectly. The dial displays the characteristic banded structure of Tiger Eye, shifting in tone depending on the light and angle, giving it a dynamic and almost reflective quality. Examples like this highlight how Rolex approached stone dials not just as a material choice, but as part of a complete aesthetic.
The case remains well preserved with strong proportions, paired with a bracelet that complements the overall look. The classic Datejust configuration — fluted bezel, balanced 36mm case — provides a familiar frame for what is otherwise a more unusual dial execution.
The Tiger Eye dial has a very particular presence on the wrist. It is not as immediately bold as some other stone dials, but reveals its depth gradually, with the natural pattern catching light in different ways throughout the day. A slightly understated but highly distinctive configuration that stands apart the more you spend time with it.
