A Hidden Gem of the King Midas Family
The original Rolex King Midas remains one of the most distinctive watches the brand has ever produced. Introduced in the 1960s, its bold asymmetrical case challenged every convention of Rolex design and has, over the past few years, become one of the hottest areas of vintage Rolex collecting. Demand and prices have risen dramatically across virtually every generation of the original King Midas, leading many collectors to explore the later Cellini-era interpretations. Among them, the reference 4342 stands out as one of the most compelling. Retaining the unmistakable hexagonal architecture of the King Midas while offering its own identity, it represents an increasingly attractive proposition for collectors looking beyond the obvious references.
Among the different executions of the reference 4342, the blue dial is undoubtedly one of the rarest to encounter. Rather than creating contrast, the beautifully brushed matte dial becomes a natural extension of the watch itself. Its horizontal grain flows seamlessly into the satin-brushed finish of the solid 18k yellow gold case and integrated bracelet, creating an almost monolithic appearance that is remarkably elegant and unlike anything else Rolex produced during the Cellini era. The deep blue dial subtly changes with the light while remaining perfectly integrated into the overall design, a combination that is both understated and exceptionally uncommon.
Equally remarkable is the condition. Preserved in completely unworn, New Old Stock condition, the watch still retains all of its removable bracelet links—something extraordinarily uncommon for any King Midas. In truth, the words King Midas and New Old Stock are rarely found in the same sentence. Add to that one of the rarest dial configurations produced for the reference, and you have a watch that appears only once in a blue moon. As collectors continue to rediscover the wider King Midas family, examples of this quality are becoming increasingly difficult to replace.
