The 1970s were a fascinating period for Audemars Piguet, a time when the manufacture explored some of its most creative designs, combining traditional Swiss watchmaking with the craftsmanship of fine jewellery. While the Royal Oak was beginning to make its mark, Audemars Piguet was also producing some remarkable dress watches in precious metals, often featuring elaborate bracelets and beautifully executed stone and diamond-set dials.

This Ref. 14549BC is a particularly interesting example of that era, crafted entirely in 18K white gold with a factory diamond-set bezel and an unusual pavé dial featuring a mirror finish and blue sapphire hour markers. The contrast between the brilliant diamonds, deep blue sapphires and blued hands is quite something, giving the watch a very distinctive look.

Another highlight is the integrated 13-row white gold bracelet, with individually worked links that create an almost mesh-like texture. It is a wonderful example of the level of craftsmanship that went into these watches, with a substantial feel while remaining remarkably elegant on the wrist.

Measuring 31 mm, the watch is preserved in excellent condition. The case shows only light signs of wear, with well-preserved hallmarks and engravings, while the diamond-set bezel, dial and bracelet are all in excellent shape. The original crown and signed AP clasp are also present.

A very special vintage Audemars Piguet that brings together fine watchmaking, jewellery and some of the more adventurous design ideas of the 1970s. Certainly not a watch you come across every day.
