The Queen is also a King
The Rolex King Midas was launched in 1962 and was one of the most daring creations from the brand. Designed by no other than genius Gerald Genta the watch was a design masterpiece and weighing almost 200 grams it was a watch that was reserved for those who could afford it. The angular design inspired by Greek mythology quickly became an icon and landed on wrist of legends like John Wayne, Elvis Presley and Sir Jackie Stewart.
The Midas was originally launched as an independent line however transitioned into the Cellini collection over time and was produced in many configurations. One of the configurations was the square case Midas that was launched in the mid-1970s and came in two sizes, the large King 4316 and smaller Queen 4314 version. Despite the different case shape it carried a ton of Midas DNA, not only because of the sharp edges and distinct brushed finish but especially because the bracelet design was kept almost the same and we know that the bracelet is 50% of the beauty of a Midas. While the angular Midas never came with any special dials the square version was a great playfield for Rolex to bring these out with more precious dials such as Diamond, Coral and Lapis
The Queen Midas 4314 we have here features the mesmerizing and rare Lapis stone dial – a piece of art compiled of night sky blue color, gold dust and darker inclusions that make this stone look like it’s from outer space – the properties that make this stone so lovable. The dial features silver print and is actually Midas signed, not Cellini like most stone dial 4314s - and when we say most, that’s not a big number of examples anyways. Wait - it gets even better – the reference was produced in yellow and white gold and you can only imagine how much rarer the white gold version is – we assume that no more than 10 or 20% of all 4314s are made in white metal. To have this watch in hand in white gold and with Lapis dial doesn’t leave any wishes unanswered.
The watch is retained in beautiful vintage condition with sharp edges and a crisp brushed finish on case and bracelet. Further all engravings and hallmarks are fully present. The bracelet has 3 removable links making the size range between 157 and 175mm.
Another great fact about this Queen Midas is that - despite this being launched as a ladies watch back then it actually suits men’s wrists better.
