Scientific Style
The Bubbleback has a special place in Rolex history. The first examples appeared in the early 1930s, soon after Rolex introduced its self-winding Perpetual rotor in 1931. Fitting that mechanism into the Oyster case required extra room, so the case back was made with a pronounced curve. Collectors gave the watch its affectionate “Bubbleback” nickname for that distinctive shape.
The idea was appealing from the start: a watch that wound itself as it was worn, housed in Rolex’s protective Oyster case. Over the years, Bubblebacks appeared in a remarkable number of configurations, with different metals, dial designs, bezels, straps and bracelets. That variety is part of the pleasure of collecting them today; two examples of the same reference can have quite different characters.
Japan played an especially important part in the Bubbleback’s collecting story. Japanese enthusiasts embraced their compact proportions and varied dials, and demand there grew strongly through the 1980s and 1990s, helping draw collectors’ attention to them around the world. They remain sought after for both their individuality and their place in the development of the Oyster Perpetual. Today the hunt for interesting Bubblebacks is world wide causing scarcity to find great examples.
This 1947 reference 3131 in yellow gold is a lovely example of that appeal. Its iconic 32 mm case retains well-shaped lugs and shows honest wear from almost 80 years. The Scientific-style dial with its mirror ring bears radium numerals at 3,6,9 and 12 as well radium pencil hands.
The surface of the dial is very interesting with its crazy patina - most of it seems to come from resting radium hands and some might even be scuffs from a watchmaker’s hand – what is safe to say is that the dial shows life from honest wear as we cannot detect any restorations on it.
If you havent tried on a 32mm Bubbleback – don’t be shy and come in. This is so good.
