Red Khanjar
The late Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman, is not a unknown name when it comes to some of the rarest and special watches in the world. He was an avid collector of watches, some of the most important watches in the world were made especially for him. Apart from having a great taste he was also a very generous man who only commissioned the finest things to be gifted by him including watches. He was passionate about Rolex so a good number of watches that were commissioned for him bear the Khanjar, the Royal Emblem of the Kingdom either on the dial or on the case back.
These Khanjar logos can be found on many different watches, such as Day Dates, Datejusts, Daytonas, GMTs and other Rolex watches. Depending on the model and type of logo these can fetch record prices as we have seen on international watch auctions. They are coveted and highly valued by collectors because of their Royal provenance, rarity and collectability.
The watch offered here is a Rolex Day Date reference 18078 dating back to 1979. The 7 in the model number stands for ‘Bark’ finish, a decoration that was applied by hand to the bezel as well to each center link of the bracelet. The decoration, inspired by the skin of a tree, enhances the aesthetics as the watch looks more exclusive and glamorous. Most of the Bark finishes we see on watches today have faded and been polished away. This example however bears a crisp and refined finish. The case overall is very sharp and bears healthy proportions with well defined thick lugs.
The Champagne dial is in excellent condition not showing any wear to the naked eye and even if louped. The lume dots have aged to a vivid vanilla color and are matching the hands. The dial is correctly marked T Swiss Made T indicating the generation of the dial that corresponds to the serial range of this watch. The large red Khanjar is applied at the 6 o’clock position which usually bears the Chronometer text.
A watch that has a Royal provenance, that is valued by esteemed collectors and is always a conversation piece.
