1940 Rolex Bubbleback Stainless Steel Scientific Dial Ref. 2764

The Bubbleback was one of the first vintage watches to be seriously collected, with a particularly strong following during the 1980s, when certain examples were at times trading above vintage Daytonas. It represents an important period for Rolex, when the compact automatic Oyster was at the heart of the brand.

Bubblebacks were produced in an extraordinary number of configurations, across different cases, dials and metals, and that variety is a large part of their appeal. Even today, trying to catalogue every known variation would be close to impossible.

This particular example is a very clean stainless-steel watch in what is arguably one of the purest Bubbleback configurations, with regular lugs and a smooth bezel. The dial, however, is far from ordinary.

The silver surface has developed a warm, lightly yellowed patina, possibly influenced over time by the original radium material. Around the edge is a contrasting mirror-finished minute track, while the hour markers and distinctive scientific-style 3, 6 and 9 numerals are all rendered in radium. A subsidiary seconds register and gilt hands complete the dial.

It is a simple configuration at first glance, but the details make it much more interesting. The contrast between the silver dial, aged radium, mirror track and warm gilt hands gives the watch a character that is difficult to replicate.

Bubblebacks still have a dedicated following today, although genuinely well-preserved examples have become much harder to find. Many of the best pieces disappeared into established collections years ago, particularly in Asia, where appreciation for these early Rolex Oysters has always been strong.

There is a sense that the Bubbleback is quietly coming back into focus. Not because of hype, but because collectors are once again looking closely at what these watches represent: early Rolex at its most varied, experimental and full of character.
