Incredible example of a Rolex Datejust reference 6105 with Gilt dial from 1953, this large Bubble Back is also called Ovettone because of its domed case back. What makes this watch special apart from its condition is the mirror glossy black gilt dial that is just wow. The gilt graphics are crisp and fully present, give striking accents along the facetted dagger shape indexes and leaf hands. The background of red date disc has beautifully aged to a almost golden hue, the domed plexi add so much character. The crown is original and bears the Brevete cross. The yellow gold case is in astonishing condition with its striking Millerighe aka Coin Edge bezel that makes these look so different from later examples. The Jubilee bracelet is in very nice condition and shows that the watch has not had much wrist time over the years. Overall a very rare and highly coveted variant of the Datejust that comes in a dream configuration and in a condition that definitively doesn't show 70 years of age.
|Datejust Ovettone Yellow Gold Black Gilt Dial
|Excellent fat case that is not showing much wear from age. The lugs remain straight and even with clear numbers inbetween. The Millerighe bezel is crisp and free of any major wear. The Bubble back case back is unharmed and only shows light wear
|Bracelet / Strap
|Excellent matching Jubilee bracelet showing moderate wear from age. The clasp is sharp and in excellent condition with a fully intact big coronet
|Excellent black gilt dial with gilded dagger indexes. The surface of the dial is glossy and does not show any matte areas like often found on Gilt dials of this age. The luminous material is still present on dial and hands and reacts well to the Geiger. In some angles while exposed to strong light the dial shows light specking on the surface not affecting the gloss
Released in 1945 to celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary, the Datejust was the first automatic chronometer wristwatch to indicate the date through a window on the dial. The Datejust is characterized by its date window under the ‘cyclops’ window. Iconic vintage Datejusts were made in 36mm case diameter, with a range of steel and precious metal versions.
