1959 Rolex Datejust Tropical Dial Ref. 6605 (Super Full Set)

A 6605 that ticks every box

The early Rolex Datejust references continue to hold a special place in vintage Rolex collecting. They represent the formative years of one of Rolex's most enduring models, combining elegant proportions with details that gradually disappeared as production evolved. Dating back to 1959, this reference 6605 aka Ovettone brings together many of those characteristics that seasoned collectors appreciate. 
The yellow gold case remains remarkably well defined for its age, retaining straight, even lugs and the beautifully preserved early Millerighe bezel with its finer, coin-edge style fluting. Naturally, a watch that has been enjoyed for more than six decades shows honest signs of age, but the overall preservation is exactly what one hopes to find in an untouched early Datejust.

The Jubilee bracelet is equally pleasing. Original, unrestored and correctly matched to the watch, it retains its Swiss-made construction, the desirable Big Logo clasp dated 3/59, perfectly consistent with the production period. The moderate stretch is entirely in keeping with an original bracelet of this age and, once sized correctly, wears comfortably on the wrist. 

The true highlight, however, is the dial. Originally finished in a light tone, it has aged naturally into a wonderfully even tropical surface with a soft matte texture that gives the watch tremendous warmth and individuality. Completing the picture is the original roulette date disc, one of those small details that collectors are always pleased to discover.

As impressive as the watch itself is, the accompanying accessories elevate it to another level. Preserved as a remarkable collector's set, it is accompanied by its original warranty, COSC chronometer certificate, a bunch of booklets, stickered outer box and the rare large green Rolex pyramid box correctly labelled Datejust on the inside. 

Finding an early Datejust with one or two of these qualities is already rewarding. Finding one that brings together honest condition, a beautifully aged tropical dial, matching bracelet and such an exceptionally complete set is something encountered only very occasionally, and exactly the kind of watch that makes the search for great vintage Rolexes so worthwhile.
