A Datejust from 1001 Nights – Again

Some watches are so rare that finding one feels like a once-in-a-lifetime event. Finding a second, identical example belongs somewhere between collecting and believing in miracles.

Rolex watches featuring Arabic-Hindi numerals have always occupied a special place within the world of vintage collecting especially here at Momentum. Produced in extremely small quantities for select Middle Eastern markets, these dials rank among the rarest ever fitted to both the Day-Date and Datejust. While a number of Day-Dates have surfaced over the years, Datejusts remain extraordinarily elusive, with only a handful of examples known across all precious metal configurations.

When we acquired our first pink gold Arabic-Hindi Datejust a short while ago, we knew of only one other example in existence. We admired it from afar, never expecting it would one day become available. Yet, against all odds, that very watch has now surfaced, and we were fortunate enough to secure it. Today, both known pink gold examples reside in the Momentum collection—a circumstance we could hardly have imagined when we first began researching these remarkable watches.

Dating back to 1969, this Rolex Datejust reference 1601 is cased entirely in 18k pink gold and retains its original matching pink gold Jubilee bracelet, a beautiful watch on its own. Its elegant silver dial is configured with beautifully proportioned Arabic-Hindi numerals, complemented by the equally rare Arabic date disc. Together they create a wonderfully balanced aesthetic that immediately sets this watch apart from any conventional Datejust. The warm tone of the pink gold, paired with the restrained silver dial, gives the watch an understated elegance while allowing these remarkable details to take centre stage.

Beyond its rarity, this watch embodies an important chapter in Rolex history. It represents a period when the manufacture was willing to produce highly specialised watches for individual markets, often in quantities so small that many collectors spend decades without encountering a single example. These regional commissions have become some of the most desirable and historically significant Rolex configurations ever produced, admired not only for their scarcity but also for the cultural story they tell.

To us, this watch is more than another exceptional vintage Rolex. It is exactly what keeps us going – being in the Middle East we feel obliged to bring watches home that are part of this region’s heritage - Against every expectation, both known Arabic-Hindi Datejusts we knew of have found their way to Momentum—there might be another one or two in a royal vault – we will never know but we arew beyond happy to offer these watches for sale.
