Sunset Stella

In the 1970s Rolex introduced the Stella dial, a lacquered and highly glossy dial which came in a rainbow of colors. These were reserved for Day Date and some ladies references and we believe they have been produced up to the early 1990s. In the 1970s the world wasn't ready for these vibrant, loud and bold colors but for sure we are today. Stella dials come in a wide range of colors including Oxblood, Blue, Green, Turquoise, Peach, Seafoam, Red, Orange, Lilac and Yellow. These colors can vary today because of different reasons. One is that the lacquer for each dial was mixed separately by hand so was different at the time of the production, the other is that over the years some dials have aged to different hues because of temperatures, humidity, UV impact and other reasons. When assessing the rarity and value of Stella dials, there are two main drivers, one is the color of the dial and one is the metal of the watch the dial is cased in. Assuming that approximately 70% of all Day Dates are produced in Yellow gold, we can only imagine how few examples in white metals have been produced. As a consequence it is safe to say that special dials for white gold are rare and in the case of Stella dials, extremely rare.  The here offered watch is a super nice and white gold reference 1803 from 1973 in really astonishing condition. The dial is an original and stunning Red Stella Pie Pan dial with diamond and baguette markers.  The Sunset red color, paired with the white gold watch is a winner. This stunning watch is not going to go unnoticed and is so much fun on the wrist.

Brief History

Rolex Day-Date

Arguably one of the most iconic watches ever made, the Day-Date aka the Rolex President was introduced in 1956 and was the first to feature both the day and date in dedicated windows on the dial.

The Day-Date is the top model in the Rolex line-up and comes in an array of configurations with rare and special dials and case decorations. It has only ever been made in precious metals with Automatic movements and historically with an elegant diameter of 36mm - the perfect size for an iconic dress watch.
