King Midas
The story of the King Midas is a special one. Long overlooked and underappreciated within the Rolex family, it is a watch with one of the richest stories. Drawing from Greek mythology, the solid 18k gold watch was named King Midas in honor of the legend in which everything the king touched with his left hand turned to gold. Its bold, angular case design is also inspired by Greek architecture, echoing the lines of the Pantheon.
At the time of its release, it was widely regarded as the heaviest and most expensive men’s time-only watch in production—not just at Rolex, but in the entire industry. Weighing between 180 and 200 grams, the watch is carved from a single block of 18k yellow or white gold.
Designed with an ultra-low profile, the King Midas was created for a select few who appreciated true opulence and rarity. It has graced some of the most iconic wrists in American history, including Elvis Presley, John Wayne, and the villain in James Bond: The Man with the Golden Gun. Notably, Rolex has only ever produced three limited editions, and the King Midas is one of them.
Now, bringing the story back to the present—this particular example is in outstanding condition. The case shows crisp, sharp factory finishes, and its overall mint condition is what truly sets it apart. The bracelet features 18 links and fits wrist sizes up to 17.8 cm. Despite dating back to 1976, the watch remains remarkably well preserved. Over time, the gold has developed a beautiful patina, taking on a warm, ancient-gold tone. The edges are clean and well defined, and the bracelet remains equally sharp.
A watch far ahead of its time, the King Midas was made for the elite, originally priced at nearly double that of a Day-Date. Today, first-generation examples are extremely rare and command significant premiums, while second- and third-generation pieces remain highly desirable—especially when found in condition as exceptional as this one.
