The Pepsi
The Rolex GMT-Master is undoubtedly one of the most iconic sports watches ever made. Originally developed in the 1950s in collaboration with Pan American Airways, the watch was designed for pilots travelling across different time zones. Its distinctive red and blue bezel, commonly known as the "Pepsi", was there from the very beginning and has since become one of the most recognisable features of any Rolex.
Introduced in 1959, the Ref. 1675 replaced the original 6542 and went on to enjoy a remarkably long production run of over two decades. During that time, it underwent several changes, from early gilt dials and pointed crown guards to the later matte dials with white printing. Today, the 1675 remains one of the most popular vintage GMT-Master references, appreciated for its classic proportions, colourful bezel and unmistakable vintage character.
Our example dates to 1978 and features a very nice matte dial with beautifully preserved and nicely vanilla aged luminous material on the dial and hands. The correct red-back aluminium insert is particularly attractive, with the blue portion showing some natural ageing that gives the watch plenty of character.
The stainless steel case is very well preserved for its age. Although polished in the past, it retains straight, well-defined lugs and clear case numbers between them. The watch is fitted with its correct solid-link Oyster bracelet, showing moderate wear consistent with age.
There is something about a vintage Pepsi GMT that never gets old. The combination of the black dial, natural patina, the colourful bezel and beautifully balanced 40 mm Oyster case makes the 1675 just as appealing today as it was nearly fifty years ago. A great example of one of Rolex's most celebrated sports watches.
