The Lapis

Few stone dials have become as closely associated with vintage Rolex as Lapis Lazuli. Used in relatively small numbers throughout the 1970s and 1990s, every dial was cut from a solid piece of natural stone before being polished to an incredibly fine thickness, a process that demanded exceptional precision. No two dials are ever identical, making each watch entirely unique. While some lapis dials present an almost uniform blue appearance, the most desirable examples are those that display natural character through their pyrite inclusions, giving the impression of a deep night sky.

This 1979 Datejust reference 16018 is fitted with exactly that kind of dial. The rich blue surface is scattered with beautiful golden pyrite inclusions and subtle natural patterns, creating depth and texture that change as the light moves across the stone. What we love about this dial in particular is the two golden streams ranging from 4 and 5 position throughout the dial to the other side – these could be shooting stars! It is these details that make lapis such a fascinating material, allowing the dial itself to become the stage of the watch. Without applied hour markers, nothing distracts from the natural beauty of the stone, while the yellow gold hands provide excellent contrast and complement the warmth of the fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet.

Introduced in the late 1970s, the reference 16018 marked the arrival of the quickset Datejust, powered by Rolex's calibre 3035. Combining the practicality of the Oyster case with the refinement of a full 18k yellow gold bracelet, it remains one of the most versatile vintage Datejust references, equally suited to everyday wear or a more formal setting.
Preserved in excellent overall condition, this example retains strong case proportions, a crisp fluted bezel and, most importantly, a beautifully preserved lapis dial free from the cracks and damage often associated with natural stone. As collectors continue to appreciate Rolex's hardstone dials, examples with attractive natural patterning and honest originality have become increasingly difficult to find. This is a particularly pleasing example, where the quality of the stone is every bit as important as the watch itself.
