Oysterquartz
The Rolex Oysterquartz reference 17000 is part of Rolex’s response to the Quartz Crisis of the 1970s, when the industry shifted rapidly towards battery-powered watches. After early experimentation, Rolex introduced its fully in-house quartz model in 1978 with the reference 17000, marking a departure from its traditional mechanical focus while maintaining the brand’s standards in build and finishing.
The watch seen here is in its most familiar configuration, with a clean silver dial that keeps the look simple and easy to read. The applied hour markers and straight hands work well with the overall design, giving the watch a slightly more technical and modern feel compared to traditional Datejusts of the same period.
The case and integrated bracelet are what define the Oysterquartz visually. Sharp edges, flat surfaces and the angular profile set it apart from the softer lines of classic Oyster cases. The bracelet integrates seamlessly into the case and gives the watch a solid, well-balanced feel on the wrist.
Powered by Rolex’s in-house quartz movement, the 17000 offers reliable and precise timekeeping. A straightforward and well-preserved example of a model that reflects a specific moment in Rolex’s history.
