Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust 17014 “Buckley Dial”
Launched in 1978, the Oysterquartz was Rolex’s answer to the Quartz crisis — a bold move during an era when the Swiss watch industry was forced to adapt to quartz accuracy and competitive pricing. Produced for roughly 24 years with an estimated total of only 25,000 examples, the Oysterquartz remains one of Rolex’s most distinctive lines.
Available in both Day-Date and Datejust versions, the Oysterquartz was offered in a wide variety of metals — from stainless steel and two tone to full gold and even a handful of ultra-rare platinum pieces. Its design broke from tradition with a striking angular case, sharp bevelling, and an integrated flat-link bracelet that gave it a retro-futuristic appeal. While often compared to Gerald Genta’s aesthetic, the Oysterquartz was entirely Rolex’s creation. It was also the brand’s first stainless steel watch to feature a sapphire crystal.
The present watch is the Reference 17014, crafted in stainless steel with a white gold fluted bezel. This configuration lends a dressier character, complemented by the original five-row Jubilee-style bracelet.
Its dial is the rare and highly collectible Buckley dial, distinguished by bold painted Roman numerals and matching painted hands. The name “Buckley” comes from John Buckley, a noted New York dealer and collector who passionately championed this dial style, ensuring it gained recognition within the watch community.
Condition is superb: the case remains sharp with defined factory bevels, the fluted bezel is crisp, and the bracelet is tight and well-preserved. This is a standout example of a model that not only holds a unique place in Rolex history, but also offers tremendous wearability as a daily piece. With renewed interest following the release of Rolex’s modern 1908-inspired Land Dweller, the Oysterquartz is enjoying a surge in recognition, making this a timely acquisition for collectors seeking something off the beaten path.
