Starry Sky - this Rolex Day Date 18038 from 1986 is one hell of a watch. It houses a beautiful original Lapis dial, maybe one of the most beautiful examples we have seen. The dial has a very strong and consistent blue color with areas of gold sparkles. The color in the sunlight is just stunning and blends beautifully with the golden case. Further the dial is correctly signed T Swiss T featuring also matching Tritium hands. The overall condition of the watch is very good, strong case with a bracelet that is not showing much wear from age. To make this a bit more attractive, the watch comes with box and Rolex Service papers. If you look up the Lapis Day Date on the internet, you will see that most of the examples are marked 'Custom' the reason is that real examples are extremely hard to find.
|Case||Excellent and sharp 18K case with well defined lugs and crisp edges.The fluted bezel is also in very good condition. Numbers between the lugs are clear and fully intact|
|Bracelet / Strap||Very good matching President bracelet showing moderate wear from age. The bracelet has 23 links and clasp code is J10 dating it to 1985|
|Dial||Excellent original lapis dial marked T Swiss T and with matching Tritium hands. The dial is beautiful without major dark areas and with decent but prominent gold sprinkles. There are three very tiny hairlines above the day window,impossible to detect with the naked eye and only visible upon high magnification|
|Papers||Rolex Service from japan, 2002
Arguably one of the most iconic watches ever made, the Day-Date aka the Rolex President was introduced in 1956 and was the first to feature both the day and date in dedicated windows on the dial.
The Day-Date is the top model in the Rolex line-up and comes in an array of configurations with rare and special dials and case decorations. It has only ever been made in precious metals with Automatic movements and historically with an elegant diameter of 36mm - the perfect size for an iconic dress watch.
