Looks like Marble but it’s not
Rolex hasn’t left a stone unturned when choosing the materials for their dials and there is this dial that we have been calling Marble for the longest time until we were told this dial is made of Howlite, a white mineral that features grey marble-like veins that are unique to each dial.
Preserved in flawless condition this dial was only configured with large applied Roman numerals giving it a very distinct appearance.
The dial is housed in a rather rare Rolex Day Date 18208 from 1996 with the updgraded movement Ca. 3155 featuring the double quick set function for the date and featuring the desirable smooth bezel with its sleek appearance. The smooth bezel goes extremely well with Stella and Stone dials and was only made in small numbers when compared to the classic fluted bezel variant.
The watch and its president bracelet are preserved in excellent condition and only shows very light wear from age.
The Howlite Day Date has found its attention from seasoned stone dial collectors and has become a prized rarity on the market but most importantly it’s a very aesthetically pleasing configuration – one that especially in the smooth 18208 reference becomes even better.
