Porsche
This Rolex Datejust reference 16234 is a timless stainless-steel Datejust with a white gold fluted bezel and Oyster bracelet, but with a twist you don’t see every day. The black baton dial carries a Porsche logo, instantly giving the watch a very different personality from a standard production example.
To clear any doubts right from the start: this is not a factory Rolex modification. According to the previous owner, the watch was customized locally in Hong Kong at the request of the Porsche Club HK, reportedly in an edition of 50 pieces made for club members. We do not have written documentation confirming this provenance, and as far as we know, Rolex has never officially printed a Porsche logo on a dial.
That said, the execution is where this watch becomes interesting. The Porsche logo on the dial is exceptionally well done — so much so that, purely on quality alone, one would never assume it wasn’t executed to Rolex standards. Even more impressive is the case back: it appears to have been carefully carved out and finished with an enamelled Porsche Club Hong Kong emblem that sits perfectly flush with the surface. The level of effort and craftsmanship here is genuinely striking.
The watch comes with its original Rolex Warranty Certificate issued in Hong Kong, adding an extra layer of credibility and context to the piece.
Some collectors may feel that a watch like this holds little interest because the Porsche branding was not done by Rolex themselves, and that’s a perfectly valid viewpoint. We see it differently. High-quality, period modifications made for clubs, institutions, or specific groups have long been part of the vintage Rolex landscape, and many such pieces are appreciated precisely because of their story and affiliation.
In the world of vintage watches, context matters. Sometimes you have to read between the lines. This “Porsche Rolex” may not be for everyone, but for Porsche enthusiasts and collectors who appreciate well-executed, non-standard pieces with real character, it’s a very cool watch — and one that’s likely to make a Porsche driver’s heart beat just a little faster.
