The Salmon Datejust
The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic watches ever produced by Rolex and remains a cornerstone of the brand's catalogue more than eight decades after its introduction. This reference 16234 is presented in the original 36mm Datejust size, a proportion many collectors continue to regard as the ideal size for the model. Produced during a period when Rolex was transitioning from its traditional designs into a more modern era, the 16234 is firmly positioned within the neo-vintage category. While most examples are found with silver, black or champagne dials, this watch stands apart with its attractive salmon dial, a configuration that has become increasingly sought after among collectors. The warm tone of the dial works particularly well with the stainless steel and white gold case, giving the watch a distinctive appearance without losing the understated character that has always defined the Datejust.
The applied Roman numerals give the watch a more contemporary look compared to the traditional baton markers found on most examples. Combined with the fluted white gold bezel and the highly desirable Jubilee bracelet, the result is a Datejust that feels both elegant and versatile. Like many of the best neo-vintage Rolex references, the 16234 offers the classic proportions and comfortable wearing experience of earlier watches while benefiting from modern features such as a sapphire crystal and the dependable calibre 3135 movement.
This example remains in excellent overall condition, with the salmon dial retaining its original colour and strong appearance. The case remains well preserved and the Jubilee bracelet remains tight, making for an attractive and honest watch throughout. Accompanied by its original warranty certificate, box and full bracelet links, it represents a complete example of one of the more unusual and desirable dial variations found within the neo-vintage Datejust family.
