The Aquanaut
The Patek Philippe Aquanaut was introduced in 1997 as a more contemporary interpretation of the Nautilus, aimed at collectors looking for a watch with a more relaxed and versatile character. Today, it has firmly established its own identity, appreciated for its clean design, exceptional comfort and understated appearance. This reference 5066, often regarded as the little brother of the larger 5065 "Jumbo", offers wonderfully balanced proportions that make it an easy watch to wear every day.
The hallmark of the reference is its distinctive black grenade-pattern dial, echoed by the embossed Tropical rubber strap that was unlike anything Patek Philippe had produced before. Comfortable, lightweight and exceptionally practical, the Aquanaut has become one of those watches collectors frequently choose when travelling. Its robust construction, water resistance and discreet profile allow it to transition effortlessly from the airport to the beach, a business meeting or dinner, all while remaining unmistakably a Patek Philippe. Accompanying this example are both the classic black Tropical strap as well as the much harder-to-find green Tropical strap, offering two very different personalities for the same watch.
Produced in 2000, as confirmed by its Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives, this example has been preserved in very good condition and is accompanied by a Patek Philippe travel pouch. The reference 5066 has become increasingly appreciated by collectors who favour its slightly more compact dimensions over the larger 5065, making it one of the most wearable Aquanaut references ever produced. Combining the iconic grenade dial, two original Tropical straps and documented production history, it represents a particularly attractive example of one of Patek Philippe's most successful modern designs.
